The concept for Kiali Cakes began in October of 2009. Though I had been making cakes for a few years before that; opening my own business is a recent venture. I began my cake decorating career in 2005 while working at a local grocery store chain in my town. I fell into the art by accident, when the lady who was originally making them developed carpal tunnel and had to go out for medical leave. They needed a replacement for her as soon as possible. I had no prior experience, but I was asked to take her place anyway. And so the story began.
I started by making the cakes you find in the grocery store case and also did custom orders for customers every day. My daily custom orders would range from 1 cake to 10 cakes, depending upon the day and the season. I had never taken a cake decorating class, I just learned by doing, watching and every so often someone would show me something new. It was a learning experience to make the custom orders and tailor each cake to each customer's desire. This is what helped me grow in to the cake decorator that I am today. Using your imagination to make cakes is unbelievable- the cake is your canvas.
After my run with the grocery store was through, I continued making my friends and family members cakes for their birthdays or other occasions right from my own house. I became the designated cake-maker and I am still today.
